Job Description
The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is an official university-level research center at Texas State University. The TxSSC is tasked in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the Governor’s Homeland Security Strategic Plan with key school safety initiatives and mandates. The TxSSC serves as the clearinghouse for the dissemination of safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for K-12 schools and junior colleges throughout the state of Texas. As a result, Texas has become a national leader in school safety practices and is relied upon for assistance and guidance from jurisdictions throughout the nation.
The Online Training Specialist will work closely with the Youth Initiatives Coordinator of the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) to develop and implement online training curriculum for the Texas E-Cigarette and Tobacco Awareness Program (ETAP) and the Youth School Safety (YSS) Program. ETAP is the state mandated course for individuals under the age of 21 who are cited for possession of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. This online course meets the requirements of Section 161.253, Texas Health and Safety Code, funded by Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). YSS is funded through state legislative appropriations for school safety as outlined in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code. Curriculum for these programs will be delivered through online training modules and focus on preventing youth tobacco and other drug use, teen mental health, school campus safety, and more.
This position will have the opportunity to research, develop, and maintain training curriculum, provide technical assistance, and assist in the development and maintenance of a Youth School Safety Learning Portal. The position will require the development of these training modules to be tailored for youth, educators, administrators, additional school personnel, and parent and community-based organizations.
This position allows for considerable independent judgment, initiative, and action within the program. This position requires outstanding writing skills, critical thinking skills, excellent customer service, high attention to detail, organizational skills, enthusiastic professionalism, and the ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
