Job Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology in the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University seeks a full-time faculty member as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, to join our Cornea Service. Applicants must be board certified/eligible, and fellowship trained. Duties will include clinical care of patients, didactic and clinical training of residents, medical students, and potentially fellows. The successful candidate would be expected to be productive in clinical research and to play a pivotal role in the growth of the cornea service as they fulfill the academic and clinical missions of Augusta University. Coupled to these are opportunities in administrative and leadership positions. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Treatment of Patients - 85%

  • Provide care of Ophthalmology patients at the Children's Hospital of Georgia, Augusta University Medical Center, and the Surgery Center of Columbia County.
  • Participate in the growth of the clinical and research aspects of programs.
  • Work with the Department Chair, Ophthalmology Supervisor and Administrative Director to determine the configuration and practice environment of product line specialties within the clinic.
  • Promote compliance with AUHS physician performance standards with respect to quality indicators, medical records completion, patient satisfaction, billing and coding documentation, prompt and accurate submission of charges for service, and proper conduct of physicians in relation to colleagues, co-workers, and patients.
  • Implement, oversee, and sustain quality improvement programs within the practice clinic consistent with AUHS quality objectives.
  • Encourage and develop professional environments capable of fostering the highest level of medical performance throughout the region.
  • Develop collaborative relations with local community leaders.

Teaching/Instruction - 15%

  • Participate actively in the teaching activities in the Department of Ophthalmology including mentoring and advising of medical students, residents and fellows.
  • Attend all departmental meetings and conferences. Any excused absence must be approved by the Chairman.

Required Qualifications

MD/DO or equivalent. Completion of Fellowship in Cornea. Must have or eligible for GA Medical License.

Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.

Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round. The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time. Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds. The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 304 students per class. The MCG educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, with regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state, and two four-year campuses located in Athens (in partnership with the University of Georgia) and in Savannah (in partnership with Georgia Southern University).
