The Department of Clinical Sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston invites applications for a non-tenure track, open rank, Clinical Faculty - Longitudinal Primary Care Course Director. The Director of the Longitudinal Primary Care Course provides academic, clinical, and administrative leadership for a foundational longitudinal ambulatory clinical experience within the medical education curriculum. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Medical Education, this role is responsible for course design and continuous improvement, faculty and preceptor recruitment and development, student assessment and support, and alignment of clinical skills with the college of medicine medical education program objectives, competency-based frameworks, and LCME accreditation standards. This is an open-rank, clinical non-tenure track faculty position. This position will be Full Time at 1.0 FTE.

Responsibilities

  • Course Leadership and Curriculum Development
    • Lead the design, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the Longitudinal Primary Care Course.
    • Develop, maintain, and regularly update the course syllabus, schedules, preceptor handbook, and related instructional materials.
    • Ensure appropriate horizontal and vertical integration of clinical skills in the course, aligning the course with other longitudinal experiences, clerkships, and electives.
    • Collaborate with the Household - Centered Care course team to ensure curricular alignment and effective scheduling.
  • Student Learning, Assessment, and Support
    • Foster intentional practice, feedback, and development of students’ clinical skills, including history-taking, physical examination, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Monitor student clinical encounters to ensure appropriate breadth and depth of exposure to common ambulatory primary care conditions.
    • Implement and continuously evaluate assessment tools that include clinical skills evaluation and meaningful narrative feedback.
    • Ensure timely completion of course requirements, including assessments, grades, and course evaluations.
    • Monitor and address student concerns to promote an effective and supportive learning environment.
    • Promote student understanding of social determinants of health, health equity, and other societal factors influencing health.
    • Provide student academic support and remediation as needed to ensure achievement of course requirements and relevant competencies.
  • Preceptor Recruitment, Development, and Evaluation
    • In collaboration with the Director of Preceptor Recruitment, identify, recruit, onboard, and retain clinical preceptors.
    • Monitor and provide feedback on preceptor performance to ensure high-quality teaching and learning experiences.
    • Partner with the Office of Medical Education and Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning Innovation to develop, implement, and evaluate faculty development resources and support for clinical preceptors.
  • Assessment Alignment and Educational Collaboration
    • Collaborate with faculty and administrative leadership to develop and implement competency-based assessment tools aligned with College of Medicine Milestones and Medical Education Program Objectives.
    • Contribute to and support the use of shared assessment frameworks across longitudinal courses, clerkships, and advanced clinical experiences.
  • Additional Duties
    • Perform additional duties, including attending required course director meetings, as assigned by the Office of Medical Education and the Department of Clinical Sciences.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical degree from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic college of medicine
  • Board certification or board eligibility in one of the following specialties: Family Medicine, Pediatrics or Internal Medicine.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of best practices in teaching and learning, including active and applied learning modalities.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to use data to inform decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Track record of scholarly contributions to the field of medical education
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards for medical education (e.g., LCME, ACGME).
  • Experience in mentoring and supporting faculty members in their professional development.

Applicants must have an MD or DO, dependent on the position, from an accredited institution. Official transcripts are required for faculty appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final candidate(s). Physician applicants must possess an unrestricted Texas Medical License and board certification in their specialty. While exceptions may be considered, approval must be obtained from the Vice Dean of Education and/or the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Office of the Provost. All positions within the University of Houston System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check. Physician applicants are required to provide documentation of current licensure and board certification as part of their application materials.
