Deadline to Apply: Wednesday, November 26, 2025
Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada, and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for two open rank positions, effective July 1, 2026, subject to final budgetary approval. Applications from candidates who belong to equity-deserving groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidates will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity, and service duties while contributing to an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.
Candidates must hold a J.D. or LL.B. degree as well as either an LL.M. or a Master’s degree in a closely-related field. Preference will be given to those with either a doctoral degree in law, a Ph.D. in a closely-related field, or who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are very close to completion.
Any appointment at a rank above the Assistant Professor will require the successful candidate to hold tenure at a recognized post-secondary institution along with demonstrated, established program of SRC and extensive relevant teaching duties.
Although we will review applications from scholars with varying strengths and areas of expertise, our school is particularly interested in scholars with expertise in Indigenous and Aboriginal law, constitutional law, civil procedure, tax law, bankruptcy and insolvency law, competition law, corporate law, commercial law, private international law, race and the law, and disability law. We are interested in receiving applications from scholars engaging in innovative research methodologies to contribute to expanding and diversifying our methodological capacities.
In addition, the successful candidates must present evidence of:
- a strong emerging scholarly research and/or creative activity that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline.
- demonstrated potential for teaching excellence in the law school.
- a commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
- an ability and willingness to contribute to the life and collegial governance of the Law School and the University through collegial service. With the School’s rapid growth in recent and future years, contributions to service and administration are valued, and thus we look for candidates with the interest and capacity to contribute in this manner.
Responsibilities include: contributing to our Juris Doctor program through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students; participating in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, research agenda, including pursuing innovative, independent research that produces cutting-edge high quality results; and participating in the academic life of the Law School and the University.
Our law school recognizes that scholars have varying career paths and that career interruptions can be part of an excellent academic record. Candidates are encouraged to provide any relevant information about their experience and/or career interruptions.
