About the Opportunity

The College of Professional Studies is one of ten colleges of Northeastern University, a nationally ranked private research university. Founded in 1960, the College provides lifelong experiential learning that unleashes the capacities of aspiring individuals in all stages and walks of life. The College teaches undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students on campus and online in more than 90 programs.

Faculty members teach in both in-person and online modalities with a diverse student body. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong teaching abilities, a dedication to continuous improvement as an educator, and alignment with the scholar-practitioner model. Experience teaching at the master's level, developing on ground and online courses, and proven success in working with international students are desired attributes.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the broader analytics field and will possess experience working in industry in analytics or data science. The ideal candidate will have a record demonstrating their expertise and engagement in analytics as both a practitioner and instructor. Beyond the classroom, the candidate will engage in service to the department, college, and university, as well as professional development.

The position is a full-time, open rank, non-tenure track, renewable appointment located in Arlington, VA.

Responsibilities

This full-time faculty member is expected to bring her/his intellectual and creative capacity to bear in advancement of the program, seeking to serve students by participating in a range of teaching and non-teaching activities that support the advancement of the program. S/he will teach a full teaching load spread throughout the year and will work with the program office on administrative issues and programmatic projects.

Teaching & Curricular Oversight (approximately 70% of time)

  • Teach core courses, such as Introduction to Analytics, Probability and Statistics, Data Communication and Visualization, as well as concentration courses in the areas of Applied Artificial Intelligence, Evidence Based Management, and Statistical Modeling.
  • In conjunction with the Program Lead, develop and implement course learning outcomes, curriculum maps, resource guides, textbooks, syllabi templates, and updated course materials; includes campus-specific coursework as desired.
  • Oversee the instruction of specific courses within the curriculum. Responsibilities include supporting the Program Lead in the selection of part-time instructors, advising on syllabi, and evaluating part-time instructor performance.
  • Identify and provide recommendations to keep curriculum relevant and industry-leading.
  • Work with the Program Lead to ensure regional license/accreditation requirements are met.
  • Participate in comprehensive evaluations and periodic reviews as required by the campus in which the campus operates.

Teaching and actual course load may vary with other responsibilities, which include, but are not limited to:

Program & Campus Support (approximately 20% of time)

In consultation with the Program Lead:

  • Student Recruitment and Program Representation
    • Leverage professional networks and create local events to increase program, college, & University brand.
    • Create and provide oversight of program/industry advisory boards.
    • Represent the program in campus meetings, special events, open houses, and orientations.
    • Represent program in campus accreditation reviews and renewals.
  • Student Support
    • Act as the third line of support for student curriculum/faculty escalations (supporting Program Lead and course Principal Instructor).
    • Serve as faculty sponsor for student-led events and networking opportunities.
  • Faculty Support
    • Recruit and vet qualified candidates for part-time faculty positions, coordinate with Program Lead for secondary interviews and to complete the hiring process with HR.
    • Join campus onboarding meetings for new faculty to provide a face for the program.

Service & Professional Development (approximately 10% of time)

  • Create and present professional development opportunities for full and part-time faculty in the unit and College.
  • Serve on committees that support the mission of the program and the vision of the College and wider University.
  • Promote the discovery and dissemination of knowledge through scholarship, research, creative activity, and professional development.

Faculty enjoy a collegial work environment that allows for work-life balance and are expected to be available to students online as needed for their coursework.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must demonstrate strong teaching abilities and a dedication to continued improvement as an educator. Experience teaching at the master's level, teaching and developing on ground and online courses, and proven success in working with international students are desired attributes.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • A terminal degree from an accredited institution in computer science, statistics, analytics, data science, or a related field by the start of the appointment date.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in advanced analytics or data science and familiarity with commonly used tools and techniques in analytics (R, python, Tableau, Spark, SQL, etc.).
  • Knowledge about how to manage, analyze, communicate, visualize, and lead with artificial intelligence is a plus.
  • Experience teaching at the graduate level and innovative use of technology in support of assessment and learning.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, specifically with the ability to communicate technical concepts to novices and non-technical stakeholders.

Pay Range

Assistant Teaching Professor: $70,000.00 - $101,000.00 | Associate Teaching Professor: $77,000.00 - $117,000.00 | Full Teaching Professor: $106,000.00 - $150,000.00
