Open Rank Teaching Professor, Business Ethics and Society Program
Location: Notre Dame, IN, United States
Open Date: Oct 10, 2025
Deadline: Nov 21, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
Description: The Business Ethics and Society Program (BESP) in the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business (MCOB) seeks a Teaching Professor (open rank; non-tenure-track).
BESP is an initiative in MCOB that seeks to explore the philosophical and theological contributions to an understanding of business in a just and humane society. It comprises several distinguished faculty from various disciplines, a dedicated undergraduate minor called 'Business and the Common Good,' and a growing number of students from a range of business majors. It complements students' major studies and partners with undergraduate and graduate units both within MCOB and throughout the University.
The primary responsibility for this Teaching Professor position is to assist with the multiple sections of its course 'Why Business?' This course draws on classic and contemporary sources from economics, philosophy, and theology to investigate whether there is such a thing as 'honorable business,' and, if so, what exactly it is. The course satisfies the University's 'Catholicism and the Disciplines' requirement, its second philosophy requirement. It is required for students in the Business Honors Program, in the 'Business and the Common Good' minor, and in other minors and programs in MCOB. In addition to sections of 'Why Business?', the Teaching Professor would be expected to teach other courses related to business ethics in BESP and MCOB, such as 'Foundations of Ethical Behavior' or 'God and Business?.'
An ideal candidate would have:
- A PhD in philosophy, theology, business ethics, economics, or a related field;
- Demonstrated success in teaching interdisciplinary courses, including at the intersection of fields such as moral philosophy, moral theology, business ethics, economics, law, and Catholic social thought;
- Active engagement with research and literature in business ethics (broadly construed);
- A degree from or experience teaching in a business school;
- Enthusiasm for working with and mentoring business students in a mission-driven institution.
This position is not tenure-stream and would have renewable term contracts, contingent on laudable performance. Opportunities for other teaching, depending on field and interest, may also be available.
The successful candidate would also be expected to participate in the BESP community, working with its faculty and students to develop a flourishing educational and social environment. Activities with colleagues might include planning and attending guest lectures and conferences, participating in workshops, and identifying and recruiting visiting faculty. Activities with students might include alumni engagement, mentoring, information sessions and recruiting, and planning and attending various extracurricular activities.
