Ophthalmic Technician Supervisor

Position Summary

Plans, supervises, and oversees the day-to-day activities of the Ophthalmology Technicians. Organizes and participates in staff recruitment, training, and scheduling; counsels and evaluates staff. Prepares and delegates work schedules and assignments. Oversees use and maintenance of equipment, physical space, and supply inventory and monitors related expenses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs specialized diagnostic ophthalmic testing, including skilled eye exams and administration of eye drops, under clinician supervision.
  • Trains and mentors staff, residents, and fellows on equipment use and testing techniques; supports skill development of less experienced personnel.
  • Supervises ophthalmology technicians, handling hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions in coordination with leadership.
  • Manages daily operations, including staff scheduling, workload prioritization, and maintaining communication with physicians to ensure efficient patient flow.
  • Oversees equipment and supply inventory, performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and coordinating capital equipment planning.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance, conducting safety audits and promoting awareness of patient safety goals and hospital policies among staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience as an ophthalmic technician or equivalent required
  • Experience in pediatric ophthalmology preferred

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Current registration as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) required
  • Current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting. Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
