Job Description:
Syracuse University is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to serve as Outdoor Recreation Manager. Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Director, this position will manage outdoor recreation program areas that include seasonal outdoor adventure trips, a cross-country ski & snowshoe center, outdoor equipment rental operations and various other recreation programming that helps to promote and strengthen the larger departmental, unit, division and university goals. This role combines strategic program development with hands-on management and supervision of facilities, student staff, and integrated programming that supports the Barnes Centers holistic wellness initiatives through experiential and outdoor recreation opportunities.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in recreation, outdoor education, management, human development or another relevant field. Masters degree preferred.
- Minimum two years of progressively responsible experience interacting with outdoor recreation programs and facilities.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Experience with college / university outdoor education or recreation programs and facilities.
- Demonstrated success in the training and supervision of student staff.
- Demonstrated knowledge of outdoor recreation risk management planning and execution.
- Excellent planning, organizational, time management, supervisory, conflict management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a range of students and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience developing and delivering student programming utilizing an experiential methodology.
- Working knowledge of and ability to use, maintain and repair a variety of outdoor equipment.
- Possess current First Aid / CPR certification.
- Possession of current drivers license with clean driving record.
- Preferred Skills/Certifications.
- Wilderness or Remote First Aid / Wilderness First Responder certification.
- American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 2 or 3 certification.
- Leave No Trace Instructor certification.
Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision and management of a comprehensive outdoor adventure trip program. Manage outdoor trip logistics with various internal partners and external vendors to negotiate and secure services by establishing and/or maintaining relationships through email, phone and in-person meetings.
- Manage participant registration, program development and risk management aspects of the outdoor adventure trip program.
- Assist Assistant Director for Outdoor Recreation with administrative procedures related to the outdoor recreation program such as contracts and agreements, invoices, insurance requests. Communicate with participants as well as vendors and facility contacts to ensure that all parties are aware of program details, changes or relevant information.
- Assist with on-call duties as needed.
- Develop and deliver program descriptions and details to university marketing outlets.
- Create and add trip details to internal registration software (Fusion).
- Manage hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, payroll and evaluation of 30-40 part time student and non-student staff serving in various roles within the adventure trip, cross-country ski & snowshoe center, outdoor equipment rental and special event program areas.
- Provide leadership development and training for student staff based on industry standards and best practices in the field of outdoor recreation and experiential education.
- Assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures related to outdoor recreation area programs and facilities including but not limited to emergency action plans, field operations and logistics, equipment inspection and replacement, as well as all other related program policies and administrative processes.
- Manage, supervise and implement all operations and logistics of the cross-country ski and snowshoe center including staffing, equipment rental and maintenance, program development, transportation and all other program / facility needs.
- Attend regularly scheduled meetings with direct supervisor, regularly scheduled outdoor recreation team and monthly departmental meetings as well as departmental and divisional all-staff meetings.
- Collaborate with other recreation staff, well as unit, division and university partners to deliver programming that is in line with the goals, mission and vision of the Barnes Center at The Arch.
- Assist with the supervision, facilitation and implementation of the indoor and outdoor challenge course, team building initiatives, climbing wall and all other outdoor recreation program areas as needed.
- Collect data relating to participant satisfaction and other learning objectives. Attend and serve on various departmental, division and university meetings and committees as relevant.
- Assist with overall Barnes Center at The Arch facility operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
