Outreach Specialist

Job Summary

The University of Wisconsin, School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Medicine, Division of Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care is recruiting an Outreach Specialist to assist with planning outreach program activities.

This is a two year position aimed at increasing capacity for UW biospecimen collection with Wisconsin's tribal communities. It is part of a larger grant effort to improve the diversity of the UW biospecimen repository. Key project will be to understand current capacity and understand the best path forward that is in line with best data sovereignty approaches. This position will deliver and assist with planning outreach program activities, strengthening partnerships, ensuring adherence to policy, and assisting with program administration to promote stable and productive relationships between the university and local community. May assist with tracking and managing the outreach program budget.

Successful candidates will have experience in community outreach, health education and program planning and evaluation. They will have excellent skills in relationship building, coordination of projects, tracking of outcomes, strategic thinking and problem solving. They will have interest in applied research in population health and community based participatory research. They must be committed to health disparities reduction in partnership with communities affected. They will also have the capacity to work very independently and to participate effectively in a highly collaborative team.

  • This position is full or part-time, 80-100%
  • This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
  • This is a terminal, 24 month appointment. This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.
  • This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.
  • Must provide a valid driver's license. Employees may use their own transportation or receive approval for University Car Fleet usage. Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the outreach program
  • Researches, develops, and facilitates outreach program content and materials
  • Delivers outreach program content and materials to community members
  • Leads the implementation of programs, policies, and procedures through oversight of day-to-day activities for program staff and student and community volunteers
  • Schedules and secures resources and communicates logistics in support of an outreach program
  • May assist with the monitoring of outreach program budget spending
  • Develops and evaluates curriculum and programs and provides recommendations for improvement

The Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care at UW-Madison includes more than 60 faculty, over 40 Advanced Practice Providers, and 19 Fellows. The division's faculty leads cutting-edge basic, translational and clinical research programs. This research encompasses cancer biology, cancer prevention, screening and treatment, as well as survivorship and palliative care for patients impacted by solid tumors, benign and malignant hematologic conditions and those requiring stem cell transplant or cellular therapies.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $50,000; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Effective July 1, 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that positions earning less than $43,888 annually be considered non-exempt under FLSA provisions for overtime. Based on these rules, if the person selected for this recruitment will earn less than the new salary threshold at July 1, 2024 ($43,888 annually), they will be an academic staff non-exempt employee, will be paid hourly and will receive overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and to speak effectively in a group setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience related to tribal or Native community outreach, education and training, or public health.
  • Experience with legal issues relevant to Wisconsin’s tribal communities
  • Experience with Wisconsin tribal communities, familiarity with tribal sovereignty and self-determination
  • Experience with biospecimen or biomedical research
  • Demonstrated ability to project manage
  • Demonstrated ability to work with teams
  • Attention to detail; facility with standard computer software applications
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines with limited supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and in a team-oriented environment
  • Experience convening, developing and managing projects with multiple community stakeholders
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects simultaneously
