Pūkenga Matua - Senior Lecturer in Building Science
Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is seeking to appoint a permanent, full-time Pūkenga Matua - Senior Lecturer in Building Science within Te Wāhanga Waihanga-Hoahoa - Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation. This position reports to the Tumuaki - Head of School, Te Kura Waihanga - School of Architecture, and is located at the Te Aro campus.
Te Kura Waihanga - School of Architecture is an international leader in the field of Building Science, which studies the theory and practice of building construction and sustainability, promoting the construction of durable, economic, healthy buildings.
Building Science in the School has five majors focusing on building surveying, heritage conservation, project management, smart cities and digital environments, and sustainable engineering systems.
The School is currently seeking a specialist in Building Services, a critical component of this cluster of teaching and research areas. The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate expertise in Building Services and two or more of: acoustics, façade engineering, fire engineering, building surveying, heating, ventilating and air conditioning, indoor air quality, natural and artificial lighting and post occupancy evaluation. They may well be a member of an appropriate professional organisation e.g. CIBSE, ASHRAE, IES.
Key responsibilities include the following:
- Academically rigorous teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across a variety of formats and topics (including some of those mentioned above) to the highest standards
- Development of ongoing research activity that informs teaching and contributes to industry needs
- Active engagement with iwi, hapu, industry, government, professions, and diverse communities
- Contribution to the collegial development of the programme, School, and Faculty in service roles
Ō pūmanawa - About you
Demonstrable expertise in teaching and strong research abilities are necessary. Candidates should have a Master's in their field and, while a PhD is not essential, it is preferred.
They will have experience in the diverse roles of building services in architectural design and building performance; be confident in design or design-related teaching; understand the degree content and curriculum structure of our professional degree, and show strong promise of making significant contributions to the advancement of building services to achieve sustainable outcomes.
Existing or emerging research capabilities will be a part of your portfolio of skills and capabilities, although candidates may be transferring from advanced professional practice to an academic career.
Key requirements include the following:
- While a Master's degree in a relevant field is required a completed PhD is preferred
- An established track record in research publication and/or creative work, and an established research agenda
- Demonstrated evidence of a high standard of teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level and good understanding of the expectations in relation to professional competencies
- Demonstrated experience in supervising student research at Honours, Masters, and/or PhD level
- Demonstrated evidence of good oral and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds
- Demonstrated evidence of engagement and/or collaboration with colleagues in teaching and research
- Commitment to the academic discipline and to service to the University, the wider community and, where appropriate, the profession
- Able to teach into diverse papers on architecture and design
