Organization Overview
The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate's mission is to support the science and technology and environmental restoration missions of the Laboratory by providing a safe, environmentally sound, and reliable infrastructure, to provide high quality crafts and fabrication services to our customers as needed and to protect people, property, and national security.
The F&O's Production Division provides mechanical, architectural, and civil services to build, support and maintain the Lab's infrastructure. In the department of architectural we have the Paint Shop.
Position Description
The Production Division within the Facilities and Operations Directorate has an opportunity to fill the position of a Painter A. This employee will work under minimum supervision and perform wide variety of interior and exterior skilled painting operations on buildings, furniture and laboratory equipment. Prepare surface, remove paint, mix paints and matches colors. Will use all methods of application as required. Must know use and application of paints, synthetics, bleaching materials, stains and similar products and proper use and care of painting equipment. Required to rig staging and scaffolding.
The employee will be assigned to the day shift Monday - Friday 8am to 4:30pm. This position reports to the General and Shop Supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under minimum supervision performs wide variety of interior and exterior skilled painting operations on buildings, furniture and laboratory equipment.
- Surface preparation- Cleaning, sanding, scraping or removing old paint, repairing caracks, holes or other surface imperfections.
- Mixing and matching paints- selecting and blinding paints to achieve the desired color and consistency.
- Applying paint and finisher- Using brushed, roller, or spray equipment to apply paint, varnish, or other coating to walls, ceilings, furniture or exterior surfaces.
- Protecting surrounding areas-covering floors, furniture and fixtures to prevent paint splatters.
- Inspecting and maintain painted surfaces- Touching up or reapplying coatings as needed to maintain appearance and protection.
- Working safely using ladders, scaffolding and protective gear appropriately.
- Reading plans or specifications- Following blueprint or instructions to ensure the correct color schemes and finishes.
- Cleaning tools and workplace- Maintaining brushes, rollers, and work areas to future.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High School diploma or GED.
- 6-yrs total experience composed of 4-yrs apprenticeship plus 2-yrs experience, or
- 4-6 yrs. total experience composed of formal trade school plus minimum 2-yrs experience, or 6 yrs experience (no formal training).
- Able to pass in-house test of technical questions for sign painting and painting trades.
- Knowledge of a wide variety of interior and exterior skilled painting operations on buildings, furniture and laboratory equipment.
- Able explain in writing all the steps necessary to completely paint an interior room from the prep to clean-up with limited instructions.
- Possess a valid NYS driver's license.
- Possess good written and verbal communication skills, including:
- Ability to follow written instruction procedures, work orders, and similar documents.
- Ability to sufficiently write/complete work orders and other required documents.
- Ability to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers and supervisors
- Must have a telephone and provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes.
- Must be able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment.

- Have physical coordination dexterity and balance.
- Able to use of powered and hand operated hand-tools.
- Able to operate fork trucks.
- Ability to use a respirator.
- Wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection and other related safety equipment.
Other information:
The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.

The starting salary for this position is $42.41per hour.
