Part Time Faculty - College 101 Instructor
Highline College is seeking dynamic, engaging, and knowledgeable instructors to teach College 101, a foundational course designed to support new students (0-30 credits) in successfully navigating their college experience toward an AA-DTA (general transfer) degree. The course is a 3-credit course that is taught both in-person and online modalities.
The College 101 curriculum template includes assignments that move students toward the following outcomes:
- Develop a sense of belonging and community, and gain confidence in their ability to successfully navigate college experience.
- Explore the programs, degrees, and certificates offered within our Degree Pathways.
- Assess their skills and interests and see how those match up with potential careers.
- Learn about the many support services and resources available to Highline students.
- Connect with advisors to plan for their success.
- Get practical, hands-on experience using Highline's technology systems: ctcLink (student registration and information), Canvas (for classes), and our new Student Success platform (advising and support).
- Learn the ins and outs of paying for college and the many funding options that are available.
- Practice effective study, note-taking, time management strategies, and library research skills.
FACULTY-WIDE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
At Highline, successful faculty applicants demonstrate the ability to:
- Show commitment to student learning. This includes planning, organizing, and creating an interactive, cooperative, and mutually respectful learning environment, incorporating research-based practices to teaching and assessment.
- Challenge learners intellectually. This includes encouraging students to ask questions, confront limits, recognize complexities, think critically, and challenge assumptions.
- Practice culturally responsive instruction. This includes designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment that are relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline.
- Communicate effectively. This includes conveying information and expectations clearly, listening carefully, encouraging students to communicate, and acting with respect, enthusiasm, and empathy toward students.
- Demonstrate personal and professional integrity. This includes, but is not limited to, being professional, honest, and ethical in the selection and delivery of course content.
- Assessment. Ability to assess student-learning outcomes and use assessment data to modify instruction.
ABILITY TO:
- Communicate effectively in oral and written English with students and colleagues of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, and abilities, with a commitment to a culturally diverse environment.
MINIMUM:
- Master's degree or higher in education or distribution area (science, social science, humanities) or other related departments (business, TESOL, etc.); and
- Experience in advising, mentoring, or teaching with the goals of equity and inclusion at the forefront.
Preferred:
- Experience teaching first-year experience courses or similar programs.
- Familiarity with educational technology platforms such as Canvas and ctcLink.
- Knowledge of student support services and resources in a college setting.
- Experience in career advising or educational planning.
