Recreational Sports is part of the Office of Student Life, which is dedicated to supporting students' health, safety, and success throughout their IU experience. The Recreational Sports mission is to connect, inform, and inspire individuals to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Serving over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members annually, we offer a wide variety of programs across 2 multipurpose facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, adventure spaces, and more. Our team includes 46 professional staff and over 800 student employees.

Job SummaryThe Fitness/Wellness Program Assistant supports the management and development of Fitness/Wellness student personnel while helping ensure high-quality programs, services, and participant experiences. This role offers a great opportunity to stay active, develop leadership and communication skills, and become part of a supportive campus community. A person in this role gains valuable experience in building a team, customer service, conflict resolution, time management, and teamwork skills that are transferable to any future career.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Assists with staff recruitment, training, scheduling, and evaluation.
- Assist with risk management efforts.
- Contributes to operational projects, program administration, and professional development initiatives within Recreational Sports.
EDUCATION
Required
- General knowledge at the high school level.
Preferred
- Some college.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- Previous experience with Recreational Sports.
- Experience working in a collaborative environment and supporting staff, participants, or programs through effective communication and organization.
Preferred
- Experience in fitness, wellness, recreation, student personnel management, leadership development, or supervisory roles.
SKILLS
Required
- Leadership and staff development skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organization skills, time management skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Experience using Microsoft Office and related software applications.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
These positions require standing for long periods of time and frequently moving about the workspace. Positions require working both indoors and outdoors and ability to move up to 50 pounds with assistance. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work LocationBloomington, Indiana.
This is an in-person position.
Onsite work will take place at the following campus recreation facilities:
- Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC)
- Bill Garrett Fieldhouse
$18.55 per hour
Work HoursAverage of 10 hours per week during academic semesters, with additional hours available based on department needs.
Evening, weekend, and occasional break period availability is preferred.
No more than 29 hours per week across all IU jobs.
