Project DigitaL –“Linguistics reimagined: Applying digital tools in language research”

And any other projects undertaken by the Institute of Linguistics & Language Technology
Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer (RSO) to work on the DigitaL project. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Institute of Linguistics & Language Technology.
Applicants must be in possession of a Master’s degree in Linguistics, a language-related discipline with a linguistics component, or an equivalent qualification.

The post is for a period until 31st August 2027 and will entail up to 35 hours of work per week.
The initial remuneration per hour, inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustment shall be €14.58.

Further Information
The project aims to reimagine the teaching of linguistics and computer science by integrating them into a cohesive learning experience. It promotes digital tools as valuable complements to traditional linguistic analysis, enhances student and researcher knowledge, fosters international collaboration between scholars and student groups, and engages young researchers early in open science practices, fostering skills essential for modern, interdisciplinary research environments. The project is expected to yield an integrated teaching concept adaptable for future study units, addressing the digital transformations shaping society. It will foster ongoing teaching and research collaborations among partner institutions and student groups, promoting cross-border academic engagement and innovation in linguistic and computational research and teaching practices. The RSO will be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Institute of Linguistics & Language Technology.
The main duties and responsibilities of the appointee will consist of the following:
- write technical documentation, and prepare related reports within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description;
- work with the project coordination to jointly develop a pre-agreed work plan that apportions the project into a schedule of sub-tasks, which, taken together, meet all the project objectives on time;
- work flexible hours, so long as the pre-agreed sub-tasks are delivered on time and to acceptable standards, keeping records of the actual time taken, on a task-by-task basis;
- keep detailed progress reports and abide to all the conditions imposed by the project;
- engage in the dissemination process with the relevant stakeholders via a student conference and work with the project coordination to jointly prepare publications;
- organise and attend regular project internal meetings meetings;
- travel and attend meetings/conferences as the need arises; and
- perform any other project-related task as instructed by the project coordinator and key experts.
The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.
The selection procedure will involve:
- scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
- shortlisting; and
- an interview and/or extended interview.
The post is for a period until 31st August 2027, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
