Part-Time Temporary Makerspace Assistant
Position Summary
The Part-Time Temporary Makerspace Assistant provides operational support for the day-to-day activities of the Velocity Center Makerspace. This role supports makerspace users, ensures equipment readiness, and helps maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment during open lab hours and scheduled activities.
Schedule: Wednesday–Thursday 3:00 p.m.–7:30 p.m.; 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Second Saturday per month. Additional hours may be required based on operational needs.
Location: CSM Makerspace at the Velocity Center, Indian Head, MD
Report to: Velocity Center Makerspace Coordinator

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Makerspace Operations & User Support
- Provide on-site coverage during assigned shifts and serve as a point of contact for members, students, faculty, and visitors.
- Assist users with general questions related to makerspace policies, equipment use, and safety expectations.
- Support set up and breakdown for makerspace activities, including classes and open lab hours.
- Follow established procedures to ensure smooth daily operations and escalate issues as needed.
Equipment, Safety & Space Maintenance
- Assist with routine equipment checks and basic troubleshooting.
- Monitor makerspace activity to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and functional workspace.
- Report on equipment issues, safety concerns, or maintenance needs to the Makerspace Coordinator
Inventory & Administrative Support
- Assist with tracking and restocking materials and supplies.
- Maintain basic operational records such as usage logs and activity notes.
- Support adherence to established procedures and documentation practices.
Minimum Education and Training
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and reliably during assigned shifts.
- Comfort working in a hands-on, technical environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a makerspace, lab, workshop, or technical environment
- Familiarity with tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, or similar equipment
- Experience supporting safety protocols or working with the public.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to operate and maneuver equipment within a makerspace environment.
- Ability to understand and follow safety instructions.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
