Job Story
The Pathfinders’ position is a vital member of the Residence Life staff. Pathfinders contribute to residents' education by serving as mentors, role models, and academic resources, and by connecting them with other key departments across campus. The Pathfinders will play a key role in fulfilling the academic mission of the Housing and Residence Life department.
Job Summary
A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.
Job Duties
Community Development Responsibilities
- Assist residents in formulating academic objectives concurrent with their individual interests and potential skill levels.
- Provide residents with information regarding registration, drop/add, and curricular requirements.
- Facilitate opportunities for residents to develop in the areas of learning styles, study skills, and test-taking.
- Facilitate review sessions, study hours, and other academic support activities for students on the floor.
- Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with students in the LLC for the purpose of facilitating the transition to university life and ensuring academic success.
- Provide opportunities for developing skills in choosing an academic major and planning a career.
- Act as a referral agent by directing students, when appropriate, to various academic support services such as Academic Advising, the Writing Center, the Math Lab, and the Student Success Center.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Participate in training workshops prior to the beginning of each semester and throughout the academic year.
- Help run events during Week Zero.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and one-on-ones.
- Facilitate LLC educational programming for residents monthly.
- Create and maintain one bulletin board in the building, changing it monthly.
- Provide assistance to, and communicate with, faculty, staff members, and LLC Coordinators.
- Become knowledgeable about academic services available to students and make appropriate referrals.
- Actively participate in LLC floor, university/college programs, and activities, and facilitate residents’ involvement with the same programs and activities.
- Work closely with the LLC Coordinators to build community and accomplish academic initiatives.
- Work closely with the Assistant Director of Educational Engagement and the Graduate Student for Educational Engagement to accomplish residence life goals and to ensure that the interests of participating students are integrated into the program.
- Serve as a liaison between residents in LLC and other departments, specifically within the Division of Campus Life, Academics, and LLC Coordinators.
- Assume other responsibilities related to the LLC floor and residence life programs as directed by the Assistant Director of Educational Engagement and the Graduate Student for Educational Engagement.
