Patient Care Technician
Assist in the delivery of direct patient care under the supervision of a professional nurse. Supports operational functions in the Medical Procedures Unit. Assists in obtaining and caring for equipment. Helps maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Perform delegated clinical or laboratory procedures
- Monitor, set up and maintain the operations of clinical equipment.
- May monitor patient status, record and document vital signs.
- Stock and maintain inventory of specialized areas.
- May administer medications.
- Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.
- Assist in patient admission and discharge procedures.
- Assist in preparing patients for procedures.
- Assist with preparing patients for discharge.
- Documentation and navigation within MiChart.
- Assist with front desk reception duties as needed.
- Adheres to high standards of teamwork by demonstrating adaptability and flexibility.
- Effective time management, as well as excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Perform point of care testing as delegated by the nursing staff (such as vital signs)
- Adhere to infection prevention policies by appropriately cleaning patient care bays and stretchers
- Assist with transporting patients via various methods including: ambulatory, wheelchair, stretcher, or bed.
- Work as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide support to all providers and clinical staff, as well as assist nurses with patient concerns/issues/questions.
- Adhere to regulatory and compliance requirements to assure patient safety
- Participation in unit quality initiatives
- Complete annual mandatory competencies.
- Promotes highly reliable safe patient care practices.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Previous experience in an ambulatory care clinical setting, Preop/PACU, or procedural unit.
- 2 -3 years of experience.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a team setting.
- Communicates effectively.
- Demonstrates active listening, written, verbal and information technology skills.
- Works well with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member are crucial, as well as being highly motivated and organized, with a strong desire to learn.
Monday - Friday, variable start times.
- This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.
- Candidate must be able to push, pull, and/or lift at least 25 pounds. This is a direct patient care environment and role.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
