Patrol Officer
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The position of Police Officer will support the overall mission of the College of the Holy Cross Police Department to provide a safe and secure living and learning environment for all members of, and visitors to, our community.
The Holy Cross Police Department employs POST-certified officers only. Officers who are currently POST-certified must have no disciplinary record.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Protection of life and property.
- Provides public safety-related services (i.e., escorts, lock-out assists, etc.) equally to all of the members of and visitors to the community in a manner that demonstrates dignity and respect for all.
- Actively seek to identify safety and security related problems and to take the necessary steps to solve those problems quickly and efficiently.
- Promote and participate in crime prevention and safety awareness programs on campus and in the peripheral property areas near campus.
- Prevent criminal activity from occurring on the campus and in the peripheral property areas near campus.
- Respond quickly to emergency calls for police services. These include reports of crimes, criminal activities, medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, fire and intrusion alarms and accidents. Officers are required to conduct thorough investigations into these police emergency incidents, and to submit thorough and accurate written reports in all cases.
- Perform safety and security inspections of all campus buildings and grounds both on foot and in vehicles.
- Enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and applicable Holy Cross safety, security and traffic regulations.
- Take proper police action at the crime scene, administer first aid, gather evidence, locate and interview witnesses, and make arrest; appear in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of crimes.
- Possess a solid working knowledge of criminal law and criminal procedure.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must be Massachusetts POST-certified or immediately eligible for Massachusetts POST certification, and eligible for Special State Police Officer certification under MGL chapter 22C section 63.
- Must have a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license.
- Must have a current Massachusetts Class A Large Capacity License to Carry a Firearm and successfully pass the MPTC's firearms qualification program.
- Candidate must pass a thorough Background Investigation and CORI check.
- Upon preliminary offer candidate must undertake and pass full medical exam, drug testing and psychological exam.
- Previous experience in law enforcement, preferably 3-5 years.
- Physical demands are those in excess of sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb stairs, balance, walk, and run.
- Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.
- Cannot have been convicted of a felony crime.
- Must be dependable, honest, possess good moral character, sound judgment, and effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Must be a team player and work collaboratively within the Department and with the community.
- Must be able to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts as required.
