Employment opportunity available in Department of Animal Science, Macdonald Campus of McGill University, located in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. This is a full-time position, required to provide technical support for teaching laboratories at the undergraduate level.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a large teaching laboratory or several teaching labs. Develops procedures and makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Liaises between staff and students. Performs duties related to administering laboratory sections and examinations. Coordinates production of course documents. Administers accounts. Maintains equipment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
(i) Oversees the day-today operations of a large teaching laboratory or several teaching laboratories. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Confers with professors concerning the scope and objectives of teaching laboratory sessions.
(ii) Participates in the development and implementation of unit procedures and work methods. Makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency
(iii) Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Reviews existing experiments. Performs literature searches; reviews, selects and modifies methodology. Tests, evaluates and participates in devising new methodology and experiments.
(iv) Assesses equipment needs. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Oversees set-up of equipment and demonstrations.
(vi) Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.
(viii) Performs administrative tasks related to examinations such as arranging for invigilation and compiling grades. Participates in the correction of students’ written work, such as laboratory reports and assignments.
Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
(xi) Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability in animal physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, and related areas. Experience in farm animal methods is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to train undergraduate and graduate students and interact well with researchers.
- Demonstrated ability to present in student group settings.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
- Demonstrated ability to work with computer applications such as word-processing, databases and spreadsheets. Experience in working with research data is an asset.
- Knowledge of McGill's purchasing procedures (MMP application)
- Ability to carry out routine instrument maintenance.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy boxes (approx. 40 lb).
- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
