Academic Connect1. Introduction to the Department
Peking University enjoys the reputation of being the "cradle of Chinese journalism and journalism education". In 1918, the Peking University Journalism Research Society, with Cai Yuanpei as its president, was established, which opened up the earliest professional journalism education in China and marked the birth of the Chinese journalism discipline; Xu Baohuang, Shao Piaoping, Li Dazhao and others once taught at the research society, and cultivated Mao Zedong, Gao Junyu and other outstanding journalism professionals who were the first batch of Chinese people to receive a relatively systematic journalism education. In 2001, Peking University resumed the establishment of the School of Journalism and Communication, and gradually formed a journalism and communication research, teaching and talent training model with Peking University characteristics, adapting to the development of the times and facing the international frontier.
Peking University's journalism and communication discipline is a double first-class discipline. In the fifth round of discipline evaluation, our school performed outstandingly and ranked among the top. In the QS global subject rankings, Peking University's communication and media research has always been at the forefront of China and the world, ranking among the top 50 in the world in 2023. According to the Chinese subject ratings released by Times Higher Education, Peking University's journalism and communication has been rated as an A+ subject for many consecutive years, ranking first in China.
The discipline has a first-level doctoral program in journalism and communication, as well as second-level doctoral programs in communication, journalism, and new media, and has established postdoctoral mobile stations in communication and journalism. The journalism major is one of the "sixth batch of characteristic majors in higher education institutions" of the Ministry of Education, the journalism major and advertising major are national first-class undergraduate majors, and the radio and television major is a first-class undergraduate major in Beijing.
