Position Details

As the highest position among the technical staff of Aaron Davis Hall at The City College of New York (CCNY), the Technical Manager (TM) is responsible for operating, protecting, and maintaining Aaron Davis Hall's (ADH) technical assets, while also managing and overseeing the different technical activities in Aaron Davis Hall including set, lighting, and sound for campus or community events. The Technical Manager (TM) will be reporting to the Managing Director of Aaron Davis Hall.

The primary responsibility of the TM is to set and enforce safe-use guidelines for all equipment in ADH. This equipment includes power tools in the wood shop, welding equipment in the metal shop, and all additional lighting and sound equipment in both the Marian Anderson Theatre and Theatre B. In addition, the TM routinely performs (or delegates) preventative maintenance on all equipment and specs new equipment when needed.

They will be responsible for maintaining the health and safety protocols in the ADH shop and stage areas and training the technical staff and making sure equipment is properly used, stored and maintained according to local and federal OSHA regulations.

The TM is also responsible for building sets for all CCNY Theatre Department productions in Aaron Davis Hall. In addition, the TM manages the coordination and creation of stage/set design, liaising with show directors/producers, vendors, contractors, and exhibitors at ADH. In addition, the TM works with various departments on campus in specifying specific trade personnel and coordinators in order to facilitate special events in ADH. Additional responsibilities, specifically for the Theatre Department, include budgeting for all scenery, producing technical drawings and managing production meetings.

The TM also works directly with CCNY students. This position trains students on safe operation of shop equipment, and supervise student work on building, load-in, maintenance and strike of theatrical scenery.

In addition, the TM is responsible for the following:

  • Supervise all aspects of the building of the scenery
  • Keep in communication with the scenic designer about the scenery progress
  • Keep in communication with the scenic charge artist about the scenery progress and paint schedule
  • Keep in communication with stage managers about ongoing rehearsal needs and continuing changes to the scenic needs
  • Attend production meetings and be prepared to discuss progress
  • In charge of calling all scenery crew for the load-in and strike calls
  • In charge of managing all persons assigned to the scenery crew
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient dismantling, storing of all scenery for the production racking and accounting of budget for all productions/events
  • Consult and work with academic faculty, scenic designer, production or event director, and production manager of production or event to successfully realize production or event
  • May supervise a permanent staff, as well as hired staff for projects
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Technical Theatre, Theatre Production, Performing Arts, or a related field required; 6 years of professional experience in technical theatre production, including scenic construction, lighting, sound, and stage management; Demonstrated experience supervising technical crews and managing production budgets in a performing arts or academic environment

Technical Skills: Demonstrated portfolio of past finalized constructed sets; Proficiency with stagecraft tools and equipment, including carpentry, rigging, lighting, and sound systems; Familiarity with drafting software such as AutoCAD or Vectorworks; Working knowledge of lighting consoles (e.g., ETC), audio systems, and stage rigging; Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and scenic designs

Certifications: CPR and First Aid Certification; Aerial lift or forklift certification

Knowledge & Abilities: Strong understanding of OSHA safety standards and best practices in shop and stage environments; Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; Ability to train and mentor students and staff in technical theatre practices; Capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment; Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, artists, and external partners

Please note: Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office.

CUNY Title Overview

Oversees technical management of a performing arts facility and its productions. Provides input center planning, scheduling, and goal-setting; Manages center equipment and inventory, evaluating, selecting and implementing system upgrades and new equipment; Provides technical information and support for all events; Assists outside technical personnel in scheduling and managing production activities; Prepares and maintains accurate drafting and technical information for center facilities; Collaborates with College administration on facilities management and maintenance; Hires, trains, and manages Center technical staff; Assures compliance with appropriate regulations regarding safety and building characteristics; Consults with academic departments and programs on production technical requirements; Performs related duties as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $90,838 - $105,816. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
