Periodontist (Assistant or Associate Professor)
Job Description
The Faculty of Dentistry, Dalhousie University, is seeking applications for a full-time, probationary tenure-track or tenure-track Periodontist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate may also be appointed as the Director for the Graduate Periodontics Program depending on their skillset. The appointment will commence as early as July 1, 2026, or as soon as reasonably practicable possible thereafter.
Periodontics is a division in the Department of Dental Clinical Sciences. Teaching responsibilities for this position will include didactic, preclinical, and clinical teaching in all aspects of Periodontics in the Faculty’s undergraduate (Dentistry and Dental Hygiene) and postgraduate programs, including the Masters in Science (Periodontics). Additional expectations include administration of the MSc program and active participation in research and on faculty committees. If taking on the Director role, Directors of Graduate Programs act as the principal liaison between their department, program, or faculty and the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS).
Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications, experience and achievements. The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate a commitment to service including patient care in addition to supporting the University’s efforts in equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.
Preferred and Required Qualifications
Candidates must possess a DDS/DMD and either a Master’s degree or PhD and be Board certified (RCDC and/or American Diplomate) in Periodontics and be eligible for licensure by the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia. If the candidate has not successfully completed their National Dental Specialty Exam (NDSE) in Periodontics administered in Canada, they must successfully do so within 12 months of the start of the position. Private practice privilege for 1-day a week is integrated with this appointment; however, the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia does not offer academic licensure. If the private practice option is not elected, the position remains at 5-days at the University.
Preference will be given to those candidates who possess extensive experience teaching in advanced dental education or graduate programs. There must be clear demonstration of the potential to develop a program of research as evidenced by previous supervision of research students, and, ideally, experience as an independent principal investigator. The candidate should also provide demonstrated leadership capabilities.

Applicants should submit a letter of application that includes a statement of the applicant’s periodontal academic and practice philosophy and previous teaching, research, and administrative experience, and a curriculum vitae that includes the names and contact information of three referees. For more information about the position, please contact Dr. Haider Al-Waeli, Chair of the Search Committee (H.Al-Waeli@dal.ca).
