Position Highlights

Arizona State Museum at the University of Arizona is seeking a Permits Specialist, Permits Office who supports the Arizona Antiquities Act (AAA) Permits Office Manager with tasks associated with AAA compliance and administration specifically linked to projects associated with the Broadband Equity, Access, And Deployment (BEAD) Program. This work includes, but is not limited to, conducting reviews of permit applications, treatment plans, and reports, assessing the qualifications of applicants for Project Directors and Principal Investigators, and maintaining the paper and electronic records associated with projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Permits Specialist processes AAA Permit applications associated with the BEAD Program, including reviewing and approving permit applications ensuring compliance with AAA standards, treatment plans, and reports for completeness, obtaining necessary signatures, updating existing permits, and returning materials to applicants by conducting regular compliance audits and assessments.
    Permits Specialist collaborates with the AAA Permits Office Manager in developing policy and guidelines relevant to the implementation of the AAA for the BEAD Program by monitoring changes in laws and regulations.
  • Maintains paper and electronic records for the BEAD Program in the Permits Office including invoices, Notifications of Intent to Survey, permit applications, and PD/PI applications.
  • Permits Specialist performs invoicing tasks and maintains the Mandated Programs database.
  • Permits Specialist reviews qualifications to insure compliance with AAA standards for prospective Project Directors and Principal Investigators for listing on AAA Permits.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for compliance-related inquiries and provide guidance on compliance matters.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of archaeology and archaeological experience, preferably within the Southwest and with cultural resources management in the United States.
  • Working knowledge of the Arizona Antiquities Act (A.R.S. § 15-1631 and § § 41-841 through 41-844) or similar statutes from another state.
  • Ability to read USGS 7.5' maps and understanding the UTM & PLSS location systems.
  • Demonstrable skills working with Microsoft Access and ESRI ArcGIS.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to qualify under current Arizona Antiquities Act (AAA) standards as an Archaeological Project Director for the purposes of an AAA Permit.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in anthropology (specializing in archaeology) or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years archaeological experience working with a cultural resources management agency or firm in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in anthropology (specializing in archaeology).
  • Archaeological experience in Arizona.
