Job Summary

Direct and oversee Specialty & Community pharmacy departments operations to deliver quality, cost-effective and consumer focused patient care and services in full compliance with all federal, state, and agency rules and regulations, and contribute to the overall management of the department. Lead service growth and expansion while overseeing financial performance and budget management for assigned areas. Provide oversight for the designated State of Michigan Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) for each pharmacy and PICs for all non-resident pharmacy licenses held.

  • Oversee and direct the complex and high touch activities of the department(s) in all aspects of its operation and services, including strategic planning, new program implementation, operations & business management, service growth and expansion, use of technology and its evolving functionality, and fiscal management attaining metric targets.
  • Lead, and effectively delegate with oversight accountability, strategic initiatives and priorities designed to improve patient capture and throughput, and advance safety and quality, optimize inventory and drug spend with demonstrated margin improvement, standardize and streamline efficient system processes, and achieve identified milestones and delivered outcomes in accord with MM BASE+ strategy. Responsible for achieving strategic goals and initiatives.
  • Develop and executive innovative approaches to operational issues and expansion initiatives
  • Lead a dedicated team of subordinate leaders, provide operational oversight of referral processing, production, dispensing, distribution, inventory control, quality assurance, integrated clinical services, customer services, regulatory compliance, personnel management, budgeting, and information management.
  • Direct the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care activities, services and programs with stakeholder partnership and collaboration.
  • Oversee, and directly manage as assigned, the selection, direction, training, compensation, performance appraisal, promotion and discipline of all staff.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of all policy and operational procedures in all areas of pharmacy, and other areas assigned.
  • Collaborate with system Pharmacy, Finance and Revenue Cycle colleagues to contribute to the development and finalization of the annual capital and operating budgets. Accountable for maintaining budget compliance.
  • Manage the allocation of resources; develop and maintain controls for drugs, dispensing equipment & supplies, services, and facilitate the preparation of administrative, benchmarking and financial reports.
  • Ensure that the department operates within budget and in accordance with revenue targets and performance expectations established for each area and the department as a whole.
  • Assure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements, affirmative action and safety programs.
  • Employ the concepts of High Reliability Organizations [HRO], benchmarking, cost containment, and performance goal target setting in all management and leadership actions.
  • Promote an environment to improve work processes, enhance customer satisfaction, and reduce wastes and costs
  • Oversee the ongoing assessment of market potential and facilitate the collaboration of senior leadership and operations managers to implement strategies that increase business and/or enhance the integrated continuum of care within the Michigan Medicine enterprise.
  • Coach, support, direct and delegate to promote staff members? performance and motivate personnel to reach their potential.
  • Consistently implement a staffing plan that effectively meets patient care and customer service needs.
  • Resolve problems and complaints raised by patients, clinicians, physicians, colleagues and staff.
  • Represent pharmacy at local, AMC, and system level assigned workgroups, committees, and projects.

Other Related Duties:

  • Continually evaluate the effectiveness of unit operations and recommend organization changes, operations change, policy and operational procedure revisions or new product selection and implementation.
  • Maintain an administrative or clinical practice site, and participate in teaching, research and learner development.
  • Support the department's commitment to continuous improvement of activities and principles through positive and respectful contribution in all problem-solving and change management activities
  • Actively facilitates a belonging and inclusive culture.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received From:

Associate Chief Pharmacy Officer Ambulatory Care

Supervision Exercised:

Direct Supervision over Department Assistant Directors, Managers, and Designated Support Staff
Functional Supervision is exercised over all department staff as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (or equivalent) required.
  • Licensure in good standing, or immediate eligibility for Licensure, as a Registered Pharmacist with an active controlled substance license in the State of Michigan required
  • 5 to 10 years experience in Pharmacy Management directly involved in Financial, Human Resource, Operational, and Clinical oversight of a licensed pharmacy required
  • Experience in leading specialty and/or community pharmacies required; experience directing a specialty pharmacy preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with finance and budgeting principles

Physical Requirements:

The employee will be able to perform the assigned duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English.
  • Functional visual acuity and hearing for accurate assessment and recording of patient observations and information in clinical records.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently travel within the physical footprint for Specialty & Community, and other UMH pharmacy locations.
  • Manual dexterity to perform required procedure activity proficiently and safely.
  • Ability to move up to 10 pounds

Occupational Hazard Information:

All clinical and delivery staff carry out assignments in patient's homes, health care institutions and HCS offices. Drive personal automobiles to these various work site locations in all weather conditions on a regular basis.
