PhD Position:

Statistical Models for High-Dimensional and Functional Data

About the Position and Research Group

  • The candidate will join the research group on “Statistical models for high-dimensional and functional data” led by Associate Professor Valeria Vitelli.
  • The research focus is on Bayesian models for unsupervised learning with multiple data sources, mainly molecular data in cancer genomics.
  • The position is part of the BRIDGE project (Bayesian Rank-based unsupervised Integration of multi-source Data in cancer Genomics and the digital Economy), funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN).
  • Collaborations include the Norwegian Centre for Knowledge-driven Machine Learning (SFF Integreat) and the Epigenomics of Breast Cancer group at Oslo University Hospital.
  • OCBE is one of Europe's most active biostatistics groups, with over 70 researchers, focusing on high-dimensional data, Bayesian inference, statistical machine learning, and biomedical applications.

Main Tasks

  • Develop and implement Bayesian unsupervised learning models, focusing on rank-based approaches for molecular cancer data integration.
  • Address computational and methodological challenges like scalability and reproducibility.
  • Collaborate closely with project members and participate in regular meetings.
  • Contribute to open, reproducible research by developing code and algorithms.
  • Publish research findings and communicate results in scientific forums.
  • Pursue personal research interests within the scope of the project.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field.
  • The Master’s degree must correspond to at least four years in the Norwegian system, with a minimum average grade of B, including the Master thesis.
  • Strong scientific programming skills (proficiency in R, Python, or equivalent).
  • Background in Bayesian methods, statistical learning, unsupervised learning, rank-based modeling, or preference learning is a plus.
  • Experience with large datasets and biomedical applications is advantageous.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Fluent in English (both written and oral).
