Position: PhD Fellow – Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)
Department: Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Section for Forest and Bioresources
Supervisor: Associate Professor Niclas Scott Bentsen, nb@ign.ku.dk
Start Date: March 1, 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter)
Duration: 3 years, full-time
Funding: Novo Nordisk Foundation
Location: Frederiksberg Campus, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
Project Overview
- Focus on BECCS as a tool to achieve net-negative greenhouse gas emissions in Europe.
- Investigate carbon dynamics and climate mitigation potential of bioenergy systems and forests.
- Examine ecosphere–technosphere interactions, land use, and carbon storage trade-offs.
Candidate Profile
- Strong interdisciplinary background in ecology, forestry, and/or energy systems analysis.
- Experience with systems thinking and modeling.
- Understanding of carbon and greenhouse gas dynamics.
- Quantitative modeling and data analysis skills required.
- Python experience is a plus; willingness to learn and use Python is required.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent research under supervision.
- Participate in courses (~30 ECTS) and international research collaborations.
- Contribute to teaching and knowledge dissemination.
- Publish in high-impact journals and defend a PhD thesis.
