A postgraduate qualification in neuroscience will help you build a deep understanding of how the brain enables us to perceive, think, feel, remember, decide, and behave.
Key facts
- If you do well in your Master’s research, you can apply to do a PhD in Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience, or in Psychology at Victoria University of Wellington. You can also upgrade your MSc thesis to a PhD, which you can discuss with your supervisor and the programme director.

Programme structure
Courses include
- face perception
- prosody - the processing of emotional expression and tone of voice
- visual working memory
- implicit memory and learning within normal and special populations
- basic automatic and controlled processes underlying recognition and recall memory
- subjective experience during memory retrieval
- memory for applied materials in applied settings
- the processes and consequences of false memory phenomena

English requirements
- TOEFL® IBT: 90. TOEFL iBT® is accepted by more than 13,000 universities and other institutions in over 160 countries. The test can be taken at a test center or at home. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
- PTE Academic: 58. PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.
- IELTS: 6.5. The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

- Research degree such as Honours or Master's by thesis from a New Zealand university with an average grade of B+ or higher, an approved international equivalent, or other approved evidence of adequate training and ability.
