Programme Structure
Areas of research include:
- French and Francophone Studies - The French team has research specialisms across Francophone Area Studies, and has developed particular strengths in French and francophone literatures, popular cultures, postcolonial movements and identity politics.
- Hispanic and Iberian Studies - In addition to providing research supervision across a range of historical, political and cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world, staff in the Spanish and Hispano-American team offer the research students particular expertise in Cuban studies based on their own fieldwork and academic research conducted in the Hispanic Caribbean.
- German Studies and Chinese Studies - Research in German encompasses memory studies, post reunification cultural politics, oral history and criminality in East Germany.

- To be eligible to apply for PhD programmes, applicants should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least an upper second class honours degree in a discipline appropriate to their intended area of research.
- Substantial prior research experience may, in some instances, be acceptable in place of a first degree qualification.
- A completed application, two references (in most cases the references shall come from independent academic referees, i.e. they are not normally provided by a prospective supervisor), an up-to-date CV and copies of appropriate certificates or transcripts must be uploaded to the application in order to be considered.
