The School is also part of the London Arts & Humanities Partnership AHRC (LAHP DTP) that provides funding for PhD applications in the arts and humanities. Funding is also available through the Queen Mary Principal’s Studentships scheme.
Programme Structure
Curriculum
- Year one: The first year is usually spent consolidating the ideas presented in your research proposal, undertaking a literature review and establishing an appropriate methodology for your research. You will also undertake extensive training in research methods through the Department's qualitative and quantitative methods course and research seminar series.
- Year two: This year will be spent conducting the major ‘research’ element of your degree. This may take the form of fieldwork (either in the UK or abroad); major archival research; gathering statistical data; or some other form of research, dependent on the nature of your project.
- Year three and second progression review: This year is predominantly spent analysing the data collected in the second year and writing up the final chapters of your thesis. You will also have your second progression review towards the end of this year.

General requirements
- Applicants are expected to hold a good first degree of at least 2:1, or equivalent, and/or a Masters degree of at least Merit, or equivalent (usually 65% and above), in politics and/or international relations, or a cognate discipline.
- Relevant experience within the field may also be taken into account.
- If English is not your first language, take note of any English language requirements. The College’s standard requirement for English is IELTS 7.0 (6.5 Writing) or equivalent.
