Overview
The aim of the PhD in Public Administration programme at University of Nicosia is to produce scholars who will conduct cutting-edge research, propose innovative and practicable solutions and become leaders in the field of public administration.
The programme guides students in the use of state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research methods to generate and apply knowledge at both theoretical and practical levels.
Doctoral candidates’ research is directed to areas of direct interest to public administration, such as strategic analysis and planning, public programmes, e-government, administrative planning and organisation of public services, public policy-making and human resource management.
The programme is structured in such a way as to enable students to specialise in areas of particular interest, building on their knowledge and/or experience in public administration.
Career Prospects
Doctoral students who successfully complete the programme will have the opportunity to:
- Hold a faculty position at an institution of higher education
- Play a leadership role in the field of education, e.g. an administrative position at the level of a school or Ministry of Education and Culture
- Work as a senior manager in departments of the Ministry of Education and Culture (e.g. Pedagogical Institute, Programme Development Service)
- Take up a senior management/academic/advisory role in private educational institutions, research centres or consultancy centres.
Programme Structure
Assessment comprises of the examination of the thesis proposal, the thesis, the presentation of the thesis as a public lecture and the oral examination (viva).

English Requirements
TOEFL iBT: 79. TOEFL iBT is accepted by more than 13,000 universities and other institutions in over 160 countries. The test can be taken at a test center or at home. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS: 6.5. The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 - 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).
Other Requirements
General Requirements
- An accredited Master’s degree in politics, governance, European studies, law (MA or equivalent) or a relevant field in addition to an accredited Bachelor’s degree in one of the above fields (BA or equivalent) or a relevant field. A 2:1 upper second-class honors or equivalent would normally be required for the BA.
- English Language Proficiency: TOEFL (paper-based test 600, computer-based test 250, internet-based test 100) or IELTS 6.5. For students who graduated from an English-speaking University, proof of English language proficiency is not a requirement. Proficiency in the English Language is an essential requirement even in cases where the thesis is to be submitted in Greek as research undertaken towards completing the thesis is expected to include English-language sources.
