PhD in smart robotics for textile circularity (1.0 FTE)

Job Summary

This PhD position is dedicated to advancing autonomous robotic manipulation and control within a textile-sorting cell. Garments on a flat-belt conveyor are grasped, unfolded, and oriented by multi-axis manipulators with custom force-feedback grippers. It involves collaboration with a sensing specialist for integrating perception and action. Advanced motion-planning and control algorithms, refined via robotic digital twins, enable handling of diverse textiles at cycle times below one second. Sensors feed an AI pipeline for real-time decision-making to route items into recycle, reuse, or manual-review streams. Iterative hardware-in-the-loop trials will prototype gripper architectures and autonomy frameworks for scalable circular-economy systems. Results will be disseminated through publications and presentations, with collaboration on in-house prototyping.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement advanced motion-planning algorithms and real-time control schemes for multi-axis manipulators. Conduct hardware-in-the-loop trials for rapid prototyping. Ensure integration of perception and action in robotic systems. Analyze data and validate solutions for complex engineering challenges. Lead interdisciplinary teams, foster collaboration, and promote innovation throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications and Requirements

A Master’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with hands-on experience in designing control strategies for multi-axis manipulators and force-feedback systems for handling flexible objects like textiles. Proven ability in developing motion-planning algorithms and real-time control via digital-twin simulations and testing to achieve sub-second cycle times. Strong analytical skills in experimental design, data analysis, and problem-solving. Proficiency in risk anticipation, mitigation strategies, and quality assurance for prototypes. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English for presenting findings and collaborating internationally.

What the Employer Offers

A fixed-term contract of 48 months, starting with a one-year position renewable for three years based on progress. Salary from €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month based on a full-time position. Holiday allowance of 8% of gross annual income and an 8.3% year-end bonus. Enrollment in a university PhD training program and the Graduate School of Science and Engineering.
