Job Details

PhD Position (f/m/x) – Neural Basis of Metabolic Adaptations 102870

  • Full time 38,5 hrs./week
  • Leipzig

At Helmholtz Munich, we develop groundbreaking solutions for a healthier society in a rapidly changing world. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation. Through strong partnerships, we accelerate the transfer of new ideas from the lab to real-life applications, improving lives.

We invite applications for a fully funded PhD candidate (f/m/x) position at the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG), located in Leipzig.

Our project focuses on dissecting the molecular and cellular heterogeneity of brain circuits. We aim to investigate how specific neuronal populations and their associated microenvironments adapt to metabolic challenges and how these cellular adaptations subsequently influence systemic metabolism. The candidate will employ state-of-the-art molecular profiling technologies. By integrating these molecular insights with physiological data, the project seeks to uncover novel mechanisms underlying the central control of adipose tissue functions and the development of metabolic disorders.

Your tasks

The project aims to unravel the complex neurobiological mechanisms that link brain function with metabolic outcomes. Through this research, you will explore how certain neural pathways influence whole-body metabolism and contribute to the overall energy homeostasis.

  • Participate in research activities focusing on the neural control of metabolism and adipose tissue function.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to integrate findings and contribute to high-impact publications.
  • Present research findings at national and international scientific meetings.

Your profile

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field and a strong interest in neuroscience and obesity research.
  • Demonstrable experience in molecular biology techniques, animal models, or metabolic research.
  • High level of personal initiative with the ability to solve problems independently and to drive the project forward.
  • Excellent English language proficiency, both written and spoken.

Benefits

  • Scientific Resources State-of-the-art infrastructure and Core Facilities
  • Scientific Training Helmholtz Munich Graduate School
  • Career counseling Career Center for PhD candidates
  • Personal Development Comprehensive in-house training and development opportunities
  • International Staff Service Support with the relocation and integration process in Germany
  • Recreation 30 days annual leave, flexi days, plus public holidays

This position provides the opportunity for you to build specialist knowledge whilst developing key professional experience, both of which will help you to make strides in your scientific career.

Remuneration and social security benefits are based on the German Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees at Federal Level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of receiving an allowance if the applicable conditions are met. The position has a fixed term of three years.
