PhD Position (f/m/x) – Rethinking Global Governance and Human Security in the 1990s

The Cologne Center for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL) is part of the University of Cologne, one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe.

The Konrad Adenauer Synergy Research Project focuses on investigating the pivotal character of the 1990s for the mobilization of the international system, examining violent conflicts and interventions, analyzing peacekeeping operations in the context of global governance and human security, and assessing the notion of successes and failures in global governance.

Your Tasks

• Conduct independent and original PhD research relevant to the project.
• Support the organization of workshops, conferences, and events.
• Present research results at project events and conferences.
• Coordinate tasks with the research team under supervision.

Your Profile

• Hold an excellent master’s degree in modern or international history.
• Have research experience or documented interest aligning with the project.
• Ability to organize workshops and conferences with diverse participants.
• Demonstrate high-quality research through an outstanding master’s thesis.
• Excellent English communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and ability to meet deadlines.
• Exemplary interpersonal skills for team and independent work.

The position is available from 01.10.2025 on a part-time basis (25.89 hours per week) for a fixed term of three years with an option for extension. Salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L.
