PhD position in "DynaDeep – Biogeochemical processes in the Dynamic Deep subsurface of High-Energy Beaches" (m/f/d)
The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) focuses on polar and marine research in disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry, and geophysics.
Background: The DFG Research Unit DynaDeep aims to understand physical and biogeochemical processes in the subsurface of high-energy beaches, known as the subterranean estuary. This project investigates how biogeochemical processes in beach sediments are driven by inputs from waves, tides, and groundwater, shaping carbon and nutrient cycling. It involves in-situ measurements, laboratory experiments, and collaboration with 12 other PhD projects. For more information, visit: https://uol.de/icbm/verbundprojekte/dynadeep.
Your Tasks: Conduct field measurements to quantify organic carbon inflow into the upper beach; set up incubation experiments to measure reaction rates in beach sediments; apply and develop numerical and empirical transport-reaction models; publish results in scientific journals and communicate them accessibly.
Your Profile: A university degree (M.Sc. or diploma) in environmental sciences, marine biogeochemistry, or related discipline; experience in measuring biogeochemical transport and reaction rates, preferably with knowledge of diffusion/flow dispersion and oxygen dynamics; very good English knowledge (CEFR level C1); willingness for fieldwork under challenging conditions; strong interest in collaborative research.
Further Information: This is a full-time position, limited to 3.5 years, suitable for part-time; salary up to TVöD Bund level 13 (75%); location: Bremerhaven; contact: Dr. Moritz Holtappels at moritz.holtappels@awi.de or +49(471)4831-2030. All doctoral candidates join AWI's POLMAR program for training and support. AWI promotes diversity, gender parity, and work-family compatibility.
