New Perspectives in CNG Channel Research: Mechanistic Insights and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies for Retinal Degeneration

PhD Position (m/f/d) in Ion Channel Physiology and Retinal Research

This project centers on cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels in retinal photoreceptors. These channels are essential for visual signal transduction and play a pivotal role in disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and achromatopsia (ACHM). The aim is to develop selective pharmacological strategies targeting rod- and cone-specific CNG channel isoforms and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. The PhD position is funded through a PRO RETINA Foundation fellowship.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Perform electrophysiological recordings (e.g., patch-clamp) on heterologously expressed channels in Xenopus oocytes; analyze novel cGMP analogs and allosteric modulators
  • Investigate ligand binding to retinal CNG channels to clarify the mechanisms driving isoform-specific channel activation and regulation
  • Integrate experimental findings with computational approaches (molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations); conduct systematic analysis and interpretation of electrophysiological and molecular data
  • Prepare manuscripts and present results at scientific conferences

Your Profile:

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biophysics, or a related discipline
  • Preferably initial experience with electrophysiological techniques (e.g., patch-clamp), cell/molecular biology methods, or molecular docking and MD simulations
  • Basic knowledge of ion channel physiology is an advantage
  • Highly motivated, well-organized, and curious mindset
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills; good working knowledge of German is an advantage
  • Solid computer skills
  • Willingness to travel for project-related meetings and conferences

We Offer:

  • An innovative doctoral project in translational retinal research
  • Modern laboratory facilities and an academically stimulating environment
  • Intensive scientific supervision and opportunities for publication
  • PRO RETINA Foundation PhD fellowship

Benefits

  • secure employment / job
  • free continuing education
  • company pension
  • 30 vacation days
  • health services
  • employee discounts
  • family-friendly measure
  • assistance in apartment
  • company events
  • cafeteria
  • Company-sponsored daycare

Application:

Please submit your application documents (cover letter, CV, certificates, list of publications and a one-page summary of previous scientific work) in electronic form.

Funding is provided through a doctoral fellowship from the PRO RETINA Foundation. It is expressly noted that no contract of employment but rather a visiting scholar agreement will be signed with the institution issuing the fellowship. A letter of acceptance for the doctoral fellowship will be signed directly between the PRO RETINA Foundation and the successful applicant.
