PhD position on ID14: Linking Elasticity of (Mg₁₋ₓFeₓ)O to Seismic Anomalies in Earth’s Lower Mantle

The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 19 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

You will join the Nuclear Resonance Scattering (ID14) beamline team at ESRF composed of 8 people and study the elastic properties across the spin transition in Ferropericlase-Magnesiowüstite at extreme conditions to link the elasticity of (Mg₁₋ₓFeₓ)O to seismic anomalies in Earth's lower mantle. The candidate will conduct experiments to determine the phase stability, electronic, magnetic, and elastic properties of the Ferropericlase-Magnesiowüstite system at high-pressure-temperature conditions that will be performed at ID14 and also at other beamlines specializing in experiments under extreme conditions.

Further information may be obtained from Ilya Kupenko (ilya.kupenko@esrf.fr) and Leonid Dubrovinsky (leonid.dubrovinsky@uni-bayreuth.de).
