"PhD Position: Outer Space and Colonialism"

Job Summary

The Department of Geography, Planning and Environment is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to explore the social, technological, and cultural dimensions of space exploration and colonisation. The research focuses on the links between extractivism, colonialism, and outer space, including studies on earthly and alien rock displays in museums and the relationship between oceans and outer spaces.

Responsibilities

• Design and conduct an original ethnographic study on connections between terrestrial and extraterrestrial colonial endeavours.
• Engage with critical and decolonial conceptual frameworks based on fieldwork.
• Write and co-author scientific articles and complete a PhD dissertation within four years.
• Participate in conferences, workshops, seminars, and other scholarly activities.
• Contribute to the teaching program of the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment (approximately 10% of the contract).

Qualifications and Requirements

• Demonstrate passion and aptitude for research with proven interests in colonial processes and themes such as the social sciences of outer space, ocean spaces, or extractivism.
• Hold an MA in Human Geography, Anthropology, Black Ecologies, Blue Humanities, STS, or a related field.
• Have a critical perspective on colonial continuities and relevant empirical research experience, including fieldwork, ethnography, or other qualitative methodologies.
• Possess an excellent command of written and spoken English.
• Be a proactive team worker with good project planning skills.

What the Employer Offers

• A temporary employment contract of 1.0 FTE for 1.5 years, extendable to 4 years upon positive evaluation.
• Starting salary of €3,059 gross per month based on a 38-hour working week, increasing to €3,881 in the fourth year (salary scale P).
