Work on a range of exciting research topics in a collaborative, world-class environment. Whether you're into galaxies, stars, exoplanets, or cosmology, this is your opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking discoveries and shape the future of space science.
The Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy (API) at the University of Amsterdam invites applicants for PhD positions in astronomy and astrophysics. The positions are open to candidates from any country. The institute provides a stimulating, international environment in a city where English is a common language.
What you will do: You will execute a vigorous research program, under the supervision of one or more faculty members. Positions will be available in fields of research where the institute is active. On our website you will find general information about doing a PhD at the API, our research and detailed information about the available projects. Please indicate in your cover letter which of the following projects you're interested in: PhD 1: A collisional model for dust aggregates, based on continuum mechanics; PhD 2: Dust Aggregation with full treatment of Porosity, Mass, and Compaction; PhD 3: Interaction of Light with Large Porous Dust Aggregates and the Link to Observations; PhD 4/5: Unraveling the nature of fast radio bursts through a multifaceted look at their local environments; PhD 6/7: Mapping neutron stars - inside and out (subject to funding); PhD 8: Radio stars, exoplanets, and life: Creating weather reports for distant worlds (subject to funding).
What we look for: You must have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy or a related subject, by the PhD starting date, which will typically be in Autumn 2026, but this is negotiable.
What we offer: A temporary contract for 38 hours per week for the duration of 4 years (the initial contract will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it will be extended for a total duration of 4 years). This should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). We will draft an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. We also expect you to assist in teaching undergraduates and master students. The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be € 3,059 to € 3,881 (scale P) gross per month, based on a fulltime contract (38 hours a week). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
Where you will work: The Faculty of Science has a student body of around 7,000, as well as 1,600 members of staff working in education, research or support services. The Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy (API) furthers research, teaching and public understanding of astronomy.
