The International Max Planck Research School for Living Matter: from molecules to dynamics (IMPRS-LM) is a joint PhD program between the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology, the TU Dortmund University, the Ruhr University of Bochum, and the University of Duisburg-Essen, located in the vibrant and multicultural Ruhr Metropolitan Area in Germany.
The IMPRS-LM unites scientists from diverse disciplines to tackle a fundamental question in biology: How chemical components organize into the complex, dynamic systems we recognize as living cells? By combining experimental, theoretical, and computational approaches, our interdisciplinary team of molecular biologists, chemists and physicists explores the spatial and temporal dynamics of biochemical networks within the cellular environment.
The IMPRS-LM offers a unique, internationally recognized PhD training program designed to equip students with the interdisciplinary expertise needed to address complex challenges in cellular biology. Through a rigorous curriculum, hands-on research in world-class labs, and personalized mentorship, we empower students to become innovative, independent researchers ready to shape the future of science.

We welcome applicants with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Biochemistry, Life Sciences, (Bio-)Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or related fields.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants should hold (or expect to hold prior to the start of their PhD):
- A University Master Degree (or equivalent) in one of the following disciplines (or a related field): Biology, Biochemistry, Life Science, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Medicine
- 6-months (or more) full-time research experience in a life science project (with a final written report).
Applicants with a 4-years Bachelor degree that included a 6-months full-time research project can apply. Before starting the application procedure please send us the overview of your Bachelor course and your transcripts. We will contact the competent offices at the universities to confirm your eligibility for PhD studies in Germany.
Selection process
Applications to the IMPRS-LM PhD program are possible only via our ONLINE PORTAL.
The entire process, from opening of our application portal to the onsite interviews, unfolds over a four-month duration. Applicants are initially granted a window of 4-6 weeks to register on our portal and complete their application. Subsequently, our coordination office and the recruiting faculty will evaluate and select the top applicants that will be invited for a first interview online.
Successful candidates will then be invited to an onsite visit 8 weeks later to meet the recruiting labs and find the best matching projects.
