This task will involve the assessment of the solutions developed within the GRAVITEQA project with regard to their compatibility with EU climate targets, through three parallel evaluation activities.
The Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) will compare alternative configurations based on an equipment and operating cost library, calculating ROI, payback periods, and present values, with income statements and capital budgeting reports as deliverables.
The environmental assessment will be conducted through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in accordance with ISO 14040/44 (cradle-to-grave, four phases), following the ILCD and PEF methodologies and comparing the proposed solutions with conventional systems.
Technical feasibility will be verified using the KPIs obtained from the validation activities under Task 4.4.
The overall objective is to document an adoption pathway for scaling up the solutions to higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) across various sectors in the EU.
The candidate is also expected to contribute to the preparation of the following deliverable:
- D2.3: Environmental and Techno-Economic Evaluation of the GRAVITEQA Solutions to Fulfil EU Climate Targets
WP3: Innovative Tools Development for T&D Grids Reliability and Circularity in Decommissioning
and, more specifically, in the following task:
Task 3.3: Holistic Methodology for Circular Decommissioning of Abandoned Mines and Conventional Power Plants Using Large-Scale Storage
A general, holistic methodology will be developed to identify the optimal energy storage technology (or optimal mix of technologies) for transforming a decommissioned lignite-fired power plant and an abandoned mine into a Large-Scale Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) facility.
Initially, existing mathematical and simulation models of the various technologies will be assessed, taking into account the specific characteristics of the application environment, including limited space, existing structural materials, and geological data, as well as the thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical characteristics of each solution.
Subsequently, an optimization algorithm will be developed with the objective of maximizing profitability. The algorithm will take as inputs the heterogeneous physical characteristics of each technology and market prices for grid ancillary services, including FCR, aFRR, mFRR, inertia, and voltage regulation, while imposing reconstruction cost as a constraint.
Different optimization scenarios will be used to derive alternative hybrid configurations. Finally, a management algorithm will be developed to integrate the operating principles of the individual technologies, enabling the coordinated provision of grid ancillary services.
The candidate is also expected to contribute to the preparation of the following deliverable:
D3.2: Innovative Tools for T&D Reliability and Circularity in Decommissioning
