About the position

Position as PhD Research Fellow in sedimentology and petrography available at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo.

Starting date no later than 01.01.2026. The fellowship period is three years.

A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Job description

The Department of Geosciences seeks a highly motivated and self-driven geoscientist that can enrich and strengthen the Department in subjects related to alluvial fan sedimentology, architecture, and petrography. The position will focus on developing new concepts in catchment–alluvial fan dynamics within a structural framework, with emphasis on sedimentology and petrography, and integration of complementary datasets, including seismic data. The main workload will involve field investigations, subsurface data analysis (core and borehole), the integration of new data and concepts with existing seismic models. The project will involve collaboration with industry partners and other scientific teams.

The candidate will work alongside geoscientists in the BASINS section (https://www.mn.uio.no/geo/?vrtx=unit-view&areacode=152250&lang=en), at the Dept. Of Geosciences, which encompasses a broad expertise across relevant fields.

Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Qualification requirements:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in sedimentology and petrography available at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo.
  • Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Internationally valid driver’s license
  • Eligibility to obtain tourist visa into any country

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience from geological fieldwork in remote areas, including plan-ning and logistics
  • Experience from laboratory work, including petrographic analysis
  • Experience in structural geology
  • Experience from seismic interpretation

Language requirement:

Grade requirements: The norm is as follows:

  • The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
