Let’s shape the future - University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20 000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is looking for a full-time PhD researcher in the field of Neuro-endocrine Tumor (NET) Oncogenetics.

This PhD project aims to improve understanding of the genetic basis of neuroendocrine tumors (NET), a rare form of cancer. In this project germline whole-genome sequencing data from more than 1,000 European and international NET patients will be studied to investigate known tumor predisposition genes and to identify novel germline genetic drivers of NET development. This large collection of samples has been assembled through the 1000 NEN Genome consortium, an international effort led by NETwerk, the European Neuroendocrine Tumors Society (ENETS) Center of Excellence at Antwerp University Hospital (UZA). By addressing current gaps in knowledge about genetic susceptibility, this research will enhance targeted screening, genetic testing, and clinical management strategies. Ultimately, the findings are expected to support earlier detection and improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for patients with NET.

Position

  • You will actively conduct research leading to a PhD thesis, focused on the analysis of the germline sequencing results in the 1000 NEN Genome project, as well as translating these findings into clinical impact.

  • You will contribute to grant proposals and apply for scholarships.
