Objective
The Doctoral Candidate (DC) will develop poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs)-based composites as cathode catalysts for accelerating CO2 conversion in Na-CO2 batteries. The purpose is to combine aminated PILs and non-critical transition metal catalysts for activating and catalyzing CO2 redox conversion at the Solid-Liquid interfaces. The structure-activity relationship between groups in polymers, metal centres and electrochemical CO2 reduction/evolution performances will be studied by FTIR, NMR, CO2 adsorption/desorption, TEM (cooperation with DC3). The chemical environments of metal sites will be clarified for ex-situ and operandoXAS (cooperation with DC11). The latter will be combined with DFT calculations to unveil the CO2 conversion mechanism. Swagelok-type cells will be assembled to elucidate the electrochemical performance, including the CV plots for determining redox reactions, GDC profiles for cycle stability and rate capability.
Expected results
(1) Improving the performance of Na-CO2 batteries achieving high-efficient CO2 fixation and utilization, and energy supply simultaneously; Training research skills, including polymer and catalysts synthesis, as well as characterization of CO2 conversion in batteries.
(2) Targets at cathode performance: <0.5 V at 0.5 mA g-1 for CRR/CER overpotentials. 1000 cycles at 0.5 mA g-1 within 1000 mAh g-1 for cycle stability.

Skills/Qualifications
Materials chemistry / engineering, chemical engineering, and/or polymer chemistry and materials candidates with solid background on the experimental chemistry. Additional experience in electrochemistry or in electrochemical energy storage technologies are not mandatory, however valuable as is a vast experience of battery operation and materials.
Excellent communication and writing skills, thorough command of the English language

The Department of Chemistry, with more than 200 employees, is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University. The Research spans all areas of chemistry such as analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry and organic chemistry. DC4 will stay in INM (M16-18) for advanced TEM characterization of the catalysts, in ULEI (M24-26) for operandoXAS measurements, and in MONO (M30-31) for LCA of Na-CO2 batteries.
The salary will comply with the rules of the 2025 MSCA Doctoral Network program under Horizon Europe and consists of:
- a living allowance (country correction coefficient applies),
- a mobility allowance (€710/month),
- and, if applicable, a family allowance (€660/month).

The position is funded for up to 36 months under the MSCA Doctoral Network. In accordance with national regulations, the total duration of the employment contract may extend beyond the MSCA-funded period. In this case, the total contract duration is expected to be 48 months.

Scientific background
The climate targets set by the EU with the goal of climate neutrality by 2050 require a transformation of all sectors of the economy towards the use of renewables-based electricity, calling for joined forces between EU countries in order to achieve a more resilient energy system. In the e-ChemIn we are united by the idea of applying a new paradigm in designing energy devices, which shifts the current approach of creating individual materials towards engineering electrochemically ACTIVE MATERIALS INTERFACES. Working together we will: 1) design multiple sets of electrochemical interfaces using renewable, abundant, and circular materials and optimize them for new generations of energy conversion and storage devices. Created lab-scale prototypes which outperform characteristics of current benchmarks and will be ready for further developments at high TRLs (5-9); 2) develop multimodal approaches for the characterization of interfaces operando at the nanoscale, providing unprecedented insights into interfaces in action and making the characterization of active interfaces accessible to the broader scientific community; 3) successfully establish processes for the recovery of critical raw materials from end-of-life devices and apply them at the industrial scale.
