PhD Student Thirsty Cities
Job Summary
This PhD position focuses on the role of soil biodiversity in shaping urban drought resilience within the Thirsty Cities project. The project aims to develop knowledge, tools, and solutions for climate-proof, drought-resilient cities by addressing the impacts of climate change and urban development on the Dutch built environment.
Responsibilities
As a PhD student, you will conduct research on soil biodiversity and its influence on urban drought resilience. You will work in a unique research environment, receive dedicated supervision, collaborate with international experts, and participate in academic and social activities to build your profile and connections.
Qualifications and Requirements
You should have a completed Master’s degree in a relevant field such as biodiversity, ecology, or soil biology. A strong interest in plant and microbial biology, species interactions, and biodiversity modeling is required. Experience with research on microbial communities and/or biodiversity modeling is necessary, along with strong proficiency in English. You must be capable of independent work, proactive collaboration, critical questioning, and disseminating research findings to various audiences.
What the Employer Offers
The position offers a gross monthly starting salary of €3,463 for a full-time contract (36 hours per week), with a preferred start date of October 1, 2025. Benefits include an end-of-year bonus of 3.4%, 8% holiday pay, 27 days of leave per year plus one extra day, travel allowance, pension scheme, development opportunities, access to knowledge events, discounts on various services, and a supportive work environment at Naturalis Biodiversity Center.
