Project Description
The National Eczema Society (NES) invites applications for a fully funded UK PhD Studentship to support innovative, patient-centred research that advances understanding and improves outcomes for people living with eczema.
This funding scheme is open to all aspects of eczema research — from laboratory science to psychosocial, clinical, or public health approaches. NES welcomes interdisciplinary and cross-sector proposals that address the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of eczema.
All projects must be patient-centric, aligning with the NES Research Strategy, and include meaningful involvement of people with lived experience of eczema (PPI). Collaboration with the NES Expert by Experience (EXEC) advisory group is strongly encouraged.
Eligibility and Application Guidance
- Applications will only be accepted from academic supervisors (Principal Investigators) based at recognised UK research institutions (universities, NHS trusts, or equivalent).
- A named PhD candidate may be included if already identified, but this is not required.
- International collaboration is welcomed, provided the lead institution and Principal Investigator are UK-based.
- Applications may originate from any relevant discipline — biomedical, clinical, psychological, social, or data sciences.
- Multidisciplinary and partnership-based approaches are encouraged.
Prospective PhD students interested in this funding are encouraged to contact potential UK-based supervisors to discuss possible project ideas.
Funding Notes
The studentship provides full support for a 36-month PhD programme, including:
- UK tuition fees (up to £5,000 per year)
- Maintenance stipend at the standard UKRI rate
- Research expenses in line with UKRI funding guidance
Funding is for projects based in the UK, but international collaborations and data sharing are encouraged where relevant but NES will only fund domestic student rates.
How to Apply
- Download the PhD Studentship Application 2025–26 Form and Grant Application Guidance from the NES website via the 'Apply' button above.
- Ensure the proposed project aligns with the NES Research Strategy and demonstrates strong patient relevance.
- Submit the completed application and all required documents by 28 February 2026.
Applications will be assessed on:
- Scientific quality and innovation
- Feasibility and research environment
- Relevance and benefit to people with eczema
- Quality of patient and public involvement (PPI)
