Overview

This project is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Process Industries: Net Zero (PINZ). The aim of the PINZ CDT is to train the next generation of chemical engineers and chemists to develop the new processes, process technologies and green chemistries required for the process industries’ transition to Net Zero.

This PhD will focus on scaling up and optimising MEC technology for real industrial wastewater, bridging fundamental science with engineering design and energy/resource recovery. The student will investigate how process intensification, energy integration, and resource recovery pathways can be combined to make MECs economically and environmentally viable at scale.

Research Aims:

  1. Process Intensification & Scale-Up: Design and evaluate scalable MEC architectures (cassette and containerised). Use CFD modelling and lab pilots to optimise hydraulics, mass transfer, and electrode configurations.
  2. Energy Integration: Quantify full energy balances of MEC operation. Explore integration with renewable energy and wastewater treatment plant energy flows. Benchmark kWh saved per kg COD removed to build the business case.
  3. Resource Recovery Pathways: Optimise MEC conditions for selective recovery of hydrogen, ammonia, and nutrients. Assess techno-economic potential for integration into breweries, distilleries, and utilities.
