Overview
The Philosophy (PhD) in Christian Leadership (Online) PhD program from Liberty University Online core courses, specialization courses, and a selection of research courses. In the core courses, you will study biblical and theological foundations of leadership and education.
You will also study character and ethics in leadership and education as well as theological anthropology. Additionally, you’ll explore leadership and management theory, organizational theory and development, and group and team dynamics.
The specialization courses vary depending on which degree track you choose. You could learn more about being conformed to the image of Christ through the spiritual formation track, explore how to evangelize on digital platforms with the digital discipleship track, learn to breathe life into a struggling church with our church revitalization specialization, or shepherd tomorrow’s Christian leaders with the next generation ministry track.
Our Christian leadership PhD program also offers you the opportunity to study strategic Christian ministry or ministry leadership.
After completing your specialization courses, you’ll venture into research methods for Christian leadership, dissertation research and writing, and dissertation defense. Upon completion of this degree section, you will have earned a terminal degree in Christian leadership.

General requirements
- Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing. Previous education should show at least 15 hours of graduate-level Bible, Theology, or Leadership courses.
- Submit the School of Divinity Questionnaire (login required).
- Writing Sample – Submit 10 pages from prior academic coursework.
- Departmental approval is required.
- Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment.
