Description/Job Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) Program at the University of Maryland School of Graduate Studies (UMSGS) is actively seeking qualified clinicians to serve as Preceptors for students completing their clinical rotations. Preceptors play a vital role in shaping future PAs by providing real-world patient-care experience, clinical teaching, and professional mentorship.
PA Preceptors serve as role models and clinical educators who guide students from classroom learning into real-world practice. Preceptors provide supervised clinical instruction, model professional behaviors, and support students’ development of clinical reasoning and patient-care skills.
Preceptors typically host one to two PA students during assigned clinical rotations.
Students must complete seven 5-week core rotations in the following disciplines, in addition to an elective rotation:
- Emergency medicine
- Internal medicine
- Surgery
- Including these priority areas: Behavioral health, Women’s health (OB/GYN), Pediatrics, Family practice
Preceptor Commitments
Preceptors who wish to obtain or maintain a clinical faculty appointment with the University of Maryland School of Graduate Studies PA Program are expected to:
- Supervise and mentor PA students during clinical rotations and precept a minimum of 3 students per year
- Provide meaningful, hands-on learning aligned with PA Program objectives
- Offer timely, constructive feedback to support students’ clinical and professional growth
- Maintain ongoing communication with the UMSGS PA Program
- Give priority consideration to the UMSGS PA Program when offering placement opportunities
Practice Settings and Current Needs
We are actively seeking preceptors across all practice settings who provide meaningful, supervised clinical learning aligned with program objectives. We welcome preceptors across diverse clinical environments, including:
- Private practices
- Academic medical centers
- Community hospitals
- Rural and underserved clinics
- Specialty practices
- Behavioral health settings
We are also seeking preceptors who can offer longitudinal rotation experiences, particularly in rural communities, and those whose clinical practice incorporates screening, early identification, and management of eating disorders.

Minimum Requirements
All preceptors must meet ARC-PA standards and possess appropriate credentials for their specialty. Eligible preceptors include:
- Physicians with current or previous board certification
- Physician Assistants holding or previously holding NCCPA certification
- Advanced practice nurses with current or previous board certification
Preceptors must also:
- Hold a valid, unrestricted license in good standing
- Demonstrate the ability to provide timely, constructive clinical and professional feedback
