Job Duties:
Join the Housing Facilities team as a Plumber! The Plumber position duties include but are not limited to: maintenance, repair, installation and alteration of water lines, sewers, water heaters, softeners, boilers, and kitchen and bathroom fixtures within university owned apartments. At times this position may also be working with Housing Facilities staff in residence halls or dining units. This position:
- Performs plumbing work in a variety of University Housing buildings, including driving vehicles to efficiently transport staff, move supplies, and urgently respond to emergency situations
- Performs duties in a highly diverse student and family housing community, including resident-occupied spaces, as well as in vacant and common areas
- Provides support and assistance as needed in the implementation of plans and procedures in the event of an emergency
- Communicates in English via radio and in person to emergency personnel
Work Schedule will be determined with the selected finalist upon hire. Primary schedule is Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00am - 5:00pm. Work with our maintenance and trades teams focused on excellent customer service with no sales component. Base hours are all daytime hours with flexible start time.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Cleans work area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations
- Interprets blueprints and drawings to assess specifications and calculate the materials and equipment required. Discusses project plan with customer/client
- Reviews finished projects with client/customer. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations
- Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs
- Completes skilled plumbing constructions, remodels, demolitions, and repairs according to established trade standards and applicable building, plumbing, and safety codes
- Maintains, repairs and installs appliances and equipment, including, but not limited to, hot water heaters, softeners, stills, reverse osmosis units, pumps, dishwashers and garbage disposals
- Maintains, repairs, and installs all types of plumbing systems, including, but not limited to, sanitary, storm, chemical waste lines and vents, sanitary and storm sewers, gas, water systems (hot, cold, soft and reverse osmosis) and laboratory services (gas, air, vacuum)
- Maintains, repairs, and installs all types of plumbing fixtures, appurtenance such as, but not limited to, toilets, basins, urinals, floor drains, sinks, showers, drinking fountains, laboratory benches, laboratory equipment, safety showers, safety eye washes, and apparatus
Department:
Division of University Housing, University Housing Facilities. University Housing Facilities is a part of the Division of University Housing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and focuses on housekeeping, mechanical maintenance, and long-term infrastructure projects and planning. As a student service organization, University Housing Facilities provides quality living/learning environments to approximately 8,500 undergraduate student residents during the academic year and 18,000 guests in the summer months in our residence halls operations and approximately 3,000 residents in University Apartments.
University Apartments has 1,240 apartments within its 3 neighborhoods on 83 acres with almost 1 million square feet to manage. These apartments primarily serve graduate students, postdocs and their families. There is also a Community Center with a licensed childcare facility in the University Apartments operations.
University Residence Halls consists of 30 buildings containing approximately 2 million square feet and 37 acres of surrounding grounds. In addition to residential living spaces the residence hall infrastructure supports many functions and programs requiring many types of spaces such as classrooms, office space, dining and culinary space including commercial kitchens and marketplace areas, mechanical support spaces and large meeting rooms.
Compensation:
This position has been identified as a Crafts Worker position. Crafts workers may elect an increased vacation allocation with a corresponding reduction to the prevailing rate. Vacation elections with corresponding prevailing rates below: 100 hours = $51.08, 140 hours = $50.27, 180 hours = $49.49. This is a full-time position and includes a competitive retirement and benefits package, including vacation, holidays, and paid time off.
Required Qualifications:
- Journeyman Plumbing License
- A valid driver’s license that meets UW Risk Management Standards is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master Plumber License
- CCCA – Cross Connection Control Assembly back flow testing license
- Related experience in a multi-family, hospital, university housing, or similar industrial environment
Education:
High School Diploma and the completion of a registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Plumber as defined on DWD website - https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/apprenticeship/trades/plumbing.htm. Preferred Minimum.
