Department Specific Tasks and Responsibilities
- Conducts initial and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents
- Interviews with people in connection with criminal incidents and students conduct violations, including victims, witnesses, and suspects
- Secures crime scenes, collects, establishes chain of custody, and preserves physical evidence
- Provides investigative guidance to Uniform Patrol as needed
- Conducts surveillance and develops leads
- Effectively relates with the public and representatives of other law enforcement agencies in coordinating activities and resolving problems
- Subject to providing patrol shift coverage or supplemental patrol surge staffing and being dispatched to calls for service
Department Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Have begun working towards intermediate/advanced certifications
- Training as it relates to investigations, narcotics, crime scene processing
- Able to be on-call
- Additional essential skill sets include excellent customer service-based skills, to include ability to communicate effectively and efficiently both orally and in writing
- Able to demonstrate proficiency in widely used and contemporary computer-based applications
Job Summary
Mentors, leads and assists with supervision of staff of the University police department as an entry-level member of the leadership staff assigned to a specific operational area of responsibility. In the absence of the assigned supervisor, responsible for supervising enforcement duties involving general and criminal regulations and institutional rules and regulations to provide for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees and property within the areas under the control and authorized jurisdiction.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides oversight for the management of assigned sworn and non-sworn personnel positions
- Responsible for supervising enforcement duties involving general and criminal regulations and institutional rules and regulations
- Provides for the protection, safety and welfare of students, employees and property within the areas under the control and authorized jurisdiction
- First line report for reviews and approvals, in the absence of the Sergeant
- Trains and evaluates assigned personnel
- Exercises authority positively while maintaining discipline within the department
- Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act)
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent and at least 21 years of age
Other Required Qualifications: Current, valid and unrestricted driver's license. Current Basic Law Enforcement Certification from the Georgia P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training Council) or the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment
Required Experience: Three (3) years of sworn law enforcement experience. Excellent track record of self-initiated activity. Must provide the highest level of customer service. Must be articulable and well organized when creating reports. Must be able to work in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications: POST Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory, or Managerial Certificate, POST Instructor Certification, POST Designated Instructor Certification, Other Specialty Certifications
Preferred Educational Qualifications: An undergraduate or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related field
Preferred Experience: Previous supervisory experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Abilities: Must be committed to and demonstrate successful engagement of the community oriented policing philosophy. Must be able to fulfill all the essential duties of a police officer and to perform the functional role of lower ranks as required. May be expected to serve as a Field Training Officer. May be reassigned to another operational area or section of equal rank. May be required to attend a law enforcement training program at the state, region and/or national level. Able to effectively relate to the public and representatives of other law enforcement agencies. Able to work scheduled shifts (typically 12 hours). Able to continuously wear and properly gait while wearing the assigned equipment and equipment belt (typically twelve (12) to twenty-five (25) pounds). Able to maneuver in and out of assigned KSU patrol vehicle(s) throughout the shift. Able to act on and respond to physical altercations. Able to occasionally lift and/or pull one hundred and fifty (150) to three hundred (300) pounds. Able to conduct foot patrol as scheduled, typically three (3) hours per shift. Able to provide patrol shift coverage or supplemental patrol surge staffing and being dispatched to calls for service. Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines.
Skills: Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills. Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e. Microsoft Office suite). Strong attention to detail and follow up skills. Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette.
Other Information
This is a supervisory position. This position does not have any financial responsibilities. This position will be required to drive. This role is considered a position of trust. This position does not require a purchasing card (P-Card). This position may travel 50% - 74% of the time.
